American Execution
« on: September 29, 2015, 07:01:45 PM »

The screen is dark, the music rises. Lights outline the forms of nine figures on a stage.

"Four murderers," a deep voice intones, "two rapists, an arsonist, a robber, a drug smuggler. Those are your choices for tonight's episode of - " the voice rises as the music pauses " - American Execution."

The music swells as the lights go up, revealing the nine figures standing there. They are dressed in orange prison uniforms, their wrists shackled and connected to chains around their waists. Chains hang down to their cuffed ankles. They are barefoot. Surrounding the prisoners, and armed with rifles, are uniformed guards.

A slick young man in a suit strolls onto the stage, smiling into the camera. He is greeted with wild applause from the audience, and he stops, basking in the adulation in the center of the stage. Finally the applause dies down.

"Welcome to American Execution. I'm your host, Mark Raines." More applause. "Tonight we have nine more condemned prisoners, waiting for your votes to decide their fates. Three of these criminals will be put to death on tonight's show, and you decide which three will die. Let's meet tonight's contestants."

The lights lower and a single spotlight highlights the prisoner on the far left.

"Our first condemned prisoner," Mark Raines says, "is Lee Barnes. He is a twenty-five years old African-American, with black hair and brown eyes. He stands five feet, eleven inches tall and weighs one-hundred and eighty pounds. He was convicted and sentenced to death three months ago of robbing a bank. To vote for Lee Barnes, text message the word 'execute' to 8881 after the half-hour."

The text number flashes on the screen, along with the message that voting would begin at 9:30pm Eastern time. A young black man stares down, his eyes not meeting the gaze of the camera. He is, like all of the contestants, good-looking. Everyone soon learned that ratings were highest when the condemned were young and good-looking.

The light goes down on the first prisoner, and the camera switches to the now-spotlighted second condemned man.

"Next we have Quinn Ferrell," Raines announces. "He is a twenty years old Caucasian, with brown hair and brown eyes. He is six feet tall and weighs one-hundred and ninety pounds. He was convicted and sentenced to death last week of murdering his girlfriend, Annette Hardin. To vote for Quinn Ferrell, text message the word 'execute' to 8882 after the half-hour."

Ferrell is staring wide-eyed at the camera, a mixture of fear and youthful bravura in his eyes. He knows that his chances of being executed are good, as his case was front-page news. A famous athlete killing his beautiful girlfriend. He is probably the handsomest of the night's condemned men, and America loves to watch the beautiful die.

The third prisoner is illuminated.

"We now have Clark Glover. He is a nineteen years old Caucasian with brown hair and blue eyes. He is six feet, one inch tall and weighs one-hundred and ninety pounds. He was convicted and sentenced to death one month ago of arson in the burning of a shopping center. To vote for Clark Glover, text message the word 'execute' to 8883 after the half-hour."

Glover hunches over, as if he thinks that if he makes himself smaller, no one will see him and vote for him. The light on him goes dark.

"Cameron Lofton is our fourth condemned prisoner this evening." The spotlight rests on the fourth prisoner. "He is a twenty-one year old Caucasian, with brown hair and brown eyes. He stands five-feet, ten inches tall and weighs one-hundred and sixty pounds. He was convicted and sentenced to death three months ago for raping three students at Macmillan University. To vote for Cameron Lofton, text message the word 'execute' to 8884 after the half-hour."

Cameron is thin and a little bored. He has been here before, but escaped execution. Like most prisoners he has lost weight since his conviction and sentencing, as the food served the condemned is rather bad.

"We next have William Marshall," Raines continues as spotlight illuminates the fifth prisoner. "He is an eighteen years old Caucasian, with blonde hair and green eyes. He is five feet, ten inches tall and weighs one-hundred and seventy-five pounds. He was convicted and sentenced to death three weeks ago for the murder of his grandmother, Eleanor Marshall. To vote for William Marshall, text message the word 'execute' to 8885 after the half-hour."

Marshall looks very young as he stares down at his cuffed hands. He is the youngest of the prisoners and looks it. The show rules state the nine prisoners must each be of a different age, and the episode must feature a range of ages over nine years. Since Billy Marshall is eighteen years old, the oldest for this episode is twenty-six.

"Thomas McClendon is our sixth condemned prisoner. He is a twenty-two year old African-American, with black hair and brown eyes. He is five feet, ten inches tall and weighs one-hundred and seventy pounds. He was convicted and sentenced to death a month and half ago for the murder of a nurse, Jennifer Perez. To vote for Thomas McClendon, text message the word 'execute' to 8886 after the half-hour."

McClendon stares at the camera. Like Carl Lofton, he has been on the show before but escaped execution.

"Next is Jack Novak. He is a twenty-three years old Caucasian, with brown hair and blue eyes. He is six feet, two inches tall and weighs two hundred pounds. He was convicted and sentenced to death three weeks ago for the r@pe of a nun. To vote for Jack Novak, text message the word 'execute' to 8887 after the half-hour."

Novak looks defeated, the strong, defiant young man that viewers had seen on Court TV now broken by his conviction and death sentence. Appeals have been discontinued, and sentences are carried out as soon as the American public votes for execution.

"We now have Michael Shackleford," Raines continues. "He is a twenty-six year old Caucasian, with blonde hair and blue eyes. He stands five feet, eleven inches and weighs one-hundred and seventy pounds. He was convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of car salesman, Greg Kirkland. To vote for Michael Shackleford, text message the word 'execute' to 8888 after the half-hour."

The oldest of the prisoners is a handsome man, but the charming swagger he displayed before his murder conviction and death sentence was no longer in evidence.

The light goes now and comes up again on the last prisoner, a slight figure with long red hair. She stared down at her hands.

"Lastly we have Katherine Wright," Raines says. "She is a twenty-four year old Caucasian, with red hair and blue eyes. She is five feet, five inches tall and weighs one-hundred and ten pounds. She was convicted and sentenced to death two weeks ago for drug smuggling. To vote for Katherine Wright, text message the word 'execute' to 8889 after the half-hour."

The camera pans back, showing all nine prisoners lit up now, Mark Raines standing front and center.

"After the commercial break, each prisoner will draw for the method of his or her potential execution. Who will be the three who die tonight? How will they be executed? Stay tuned. American Execution returns after the commercial break."

The music rises and the show logo flashes on the screen before it cuts to a commercial for laundry detergent.

Once again the show's music is heard and the logo shimmers on screen. Mark Raines stands before a pedestal with a glass bowl containing small data cards. The prisoners still stand shackled behind him.

"Welcome back to American Execution. It's now time for each prisoner to draw a data card which will decide the method of their potential execution. As you know, our studio in the round contains ten stages - this one that you see now, and the nine that contain the execution rooms for each method. Each prisoner will step forward in alphabetical order by their last name and draw a data card. They will place the data card in the card reader, which will display the method indicated on the card on the main screen behind me. The prisoner cannot see this screen and will not know the potential method of their execution until I pronounce it.

"The prisoner will then be taken to the appropriate execution stage and be prepared and secured to the instrument of execution. When all prisoners have been assigned an execution room and are secured, you will have one hour to vote for who you think should be put to death tonight. Let's start the drawing."

Two armed guards grab the arms of Lee Barnes and lead him forward. Raines moves to the side of the pedestal, giving access to the glass bowl to the prisoner.

"Lee Barnes," Raines says, "you have been convicted of robbery and sentenced to die. Select your method of execution."

Barnes hesitates, then reaches into the bowl. The pedestal is low enough that he has only a slight difficulty with his hands cuffed and secured to the waist chain, but he pulls out a data card.

"Place the data card into the card reader," Raines instructs.

Barnes inserts the card into a small slot in the top of the pedestal. Instantly a large screen behind him, which had been displaying the show logo, changes, and the words 'Firing Squad' can be seen on the television screen.

"Lee Barnes, you will be taken to stage number five," Raines intones, "where you will be bound to the post facing the firing squad. If you are selected for execution, you will be shot to death."

The guards walk Barnes along the circular outer rim of the stages until they reached a black curtain with a large number five written in white. The curtain opens, revealing a stainless steel room. A metal post stands against the back wall, behind which was a wall of sandbags. A contingent of eight guards waits at the side of the stage, armed with rifles.

Barnes is taken to the post. His shackles are removed, and his back pressed against the post. His hands are drawn behind him and cuffed again. Straps go around his waist, chest, legs, and ankles. A white paper with a red 'x' in the center is pinned over his heart. He is not offered a blindfold. The camera lingers on the bound prisoner for several seconds, focusing on his wide fearful eyes, flashing his voting number at the bottom of the screen.

The camera returns to Mark Raines, his face posed to convey the seriousness of the occasion. He calls forward Quinn Ferrell.

"Quinn Ferrell," he says," you have been convicted of murder and sentenced to die. Select your method of execution."

The former star college quarterback reaches into the bowl and pulls out a data card, inserting it into the slot as instructed. The word 'Garrote' flashes into the screen behind him.

"Quinn Ferrell, you will be taken to stage number four, where you will be strapped into the garroting chair. If you are selected for execution, you will be strangled to death."

Ferrell is walked down to the black curtain with the white number five on it, which opens to reveal another stainless steel room. A sold metal chair is in the center, a short post against the back, straps open to receive the prisoner. Ferrell is taken to the chair and turned to face the cameras, then forced to sit. The guards quickly buckle the straps around his waist, chest and upper arms, forearms, wrists, thighs, shins, and ankles. A thin cord, made of twisted metal wires, is looped around his neck and secured to the turning mechanism at the back of the post. Ferrell's chest rises and falls quickly as his breathing becomes ragged. Once again the cameras linger over the bound condemned man before returning to the main stage.

"Clark Glover," Raines announces after the prisoner is summoned forward, "you have been convicted of arson and sentenced to die. Select your method of execution."

The tall young man, his hands shaking, selects his data card and inserts it into the card reader. The word 'Drowning' flashes on the screen behind him.

"Clark Glover," the host says, "you will be taken to stage number nine, where you will be shackled in the drowning tank. If you are selected for execution, the tank will fill with water and you will be drowned."

The curtain of stage number five opens to reveal a tall glass tank in another stainless steel room. Ankle shackles are imbedded in the floor and several hoses lead from the tank to water tanks at the back of the stage. The front of the tank swings open, and the guards lead Glover into it, releasing the cuffs around his ankles before spreading his legs wider and shackling them again to the tank. His hands remain cuffed to the belly chain in front of him. The front of the tank closes, and the guards secure it and engage the watertight seal. Glover closes his eyes.

Back to Mark Raines, he calls forward Cameron Lofton.

"Cameron Lofton, you have been convicted of r@pe and sentenced to die. Select your method of execution."

Cameron quickly reaches into the bowl and pulls out a data card, inserting it into the reader. The words 'Gas Chamber' are seen on the screen behind him.

"Cameron Lofton," announces Raines, "you will be taken to stage number six, where you will be strapped to the chair in the gas chamber. If you are selected for execution, you will be put to death with poisoned gas."

Lofton pales, the first emotion other than boredom that he has shown. He is taken to stage number six, where once again a stainless steel room contains a glass tank. In the center of this one, though, is a large metal chair. Lofton is taken into the chamber and sat in the chair, straps securing his waist, chest, upper arms, wrists, legs, and ankles. Close-ups of the straps being buckled are shown on the screen. The producers have found through market research and focus groups that the audience loves to see close-ups of the prisoners being secured to the instruments of their deaths.

William Marshall is next, and the blonde-haired, green-eyed murderer selects his data card, and the word 'Guillotine' appears on screen.

"William Marshall," the host proclaims, "you will be taken to stage number two, where you will be strapped to the guillotine. If you are selected for execution, you will be put to death by beheading."

Young Billy is led to stage number two, where the tall beheading machine waits. It is, as are all the execution machines, made of stainless steel, easy to clean. The blade is sharp. The metal bascule is raised and Billy's manacles released. His hands are quickly cuffed behind his back again, and he is pressed against the bascule. Straps secure him at the chest, waist, and legs before the bascule is lowered and shoved forward, his head lifted into the groove if the bottom part of the lunette. The top part of the lunette is lowered and locked into place. The camera from the top of the guillotine shows the sharp edge of the blade looming over the prisoner's neck, his head hovering over a metal shoot that will allow the head to drop into a metal box. The view on the television switches to an up-view of the prisoner's face, his eyes wide with terror.

Thomas McClendon is summoned forward next, and he selects his data card. The word 'Impaling' flashes onto the screen.

"Thomas McClendon," Raines intones, "you will be taken to stage number seven, where you will be secured above a pointed stake. If you are selected for execution, you will be impaled through your rectum on the stake until you are dead."

McClendon is led to the seventh stage. A tall metal pike with a sharp point stands erect in the center of the stage. Scaffolding is on either side of the pike, and the murderer is led up metal steps to it. At the top, his ankle shackles are removed, and he is made to spread his legs on either side of the pike. His ankles are cuffed once more, and the prison uniform around his rectum is cut away. The pike moves upward until it just touches its cold tip to the outer rim of the condemned man's sphincter. The audience can see him shiver visibly.

After McClendon is Jack Novak. When he selects his data card and inserts it into the card reader, the words 'Burning at the Stake' appear behind him on the screen.

"Jack Novak," Raines says in a faux-serious tone, "you will be taken to stage number eight, where you will be bound to the stake. If you are selected for execution, you will be burned alive until you are dead."

The guards drag Jack to stage number eight, where a tall metal stake rises from the stainless steel floor. Around the stake are several jets from which flames erupt, starting at low heights and then gradually growing higher. Jack is placed back against the stake and chains wrapped around his body. His hands are cuffed behind the stake. The camera focuses on his trembling hands and his quivering lips.

Michael Shackleford draws his data card, and the word 'Hanging' announces his fate.

"Michael Shackleford," intones the sympathetic host, "you will be taken to stage number one, where you will be led up the gallows and your neck placed in the noose. If you are selected for execution, you will hang by the neck until you are dead."

Shackleford closes his eyes as he hears what he has drawn, knowing that hanging is always one of the most popular methods of execution with the television audience. He is led to the next stage where a large metal gallows has been erected. He is marched up the metal steps and stood before the noose. Straps bind his legs and ankles, then his upper arms to his chest. The noose is placed over his head and the knot tightened against his neck. His hands clench tightly in front of him. The camera rests on his tight jaw and the noose that encircles his neck.

The last prisoner, Katherine Wright, is brought forward on to the main stage. A small step is place before the podium, and she mounts it and draws out the last data card. Inserting it into the data reader. She knows that, as a woman, she is almost certain to die tonight, in whatever horrible way that the data card has decided. The words 'Electric Chair' flash behind her.

"Katherine Wright," Raines announces, "you will be taken to stage number three, where your head will be shaved and you will be strapped into the electric chair. If you are selected for execution, you will be put to death by electrocution."

Katherine's legs buckle under her as she hears her fate, but the guards grab her and drag her to stage three. A large metal chair is in the center of the stage, with several straps and the skullcap which will be secured to her head. She is placed in the chair, straps going quickly around her waist and chest, then securing her upper arms, forearms, and wrists. Her legs are then spread apart and strapped at the ankles and just below the knees.

A guard goes behind her with an electric razor, and the camera shows him shaving the prisoner's rather lovely long red hair from her head, cutting to shots showing her crying face. The guard is thorough, and makes sure that her head is clean before spreading conductive gel on her scalp and placing the skullcap on her. As he straps it below her chin, another guard cuts away a patch of her prison uniform on her leg and attaches another electrode to her shin. The camera follows these preparations closely, then pulls back to reveal the sobbing woman, shorn of her beautiful hair, strapped into the lethal chair.

After a long moment, the camera returns to the main stage where Mark Raines now stands with nine new figures, eight women and one man. He introduces them as the evening's executioners, and sends the blindfolded or hooded figures, all clad in black, to their assigned stages. The female executioners go the stages with the male prisoners, while the male executioner goes to Katherine's stage. The cameras show them positioning themselves, one by one, to carry out their assigned execution.

When the camera returns to the main stage, Mark Raines is alone, and the American Execution logo is on the screen behind him.

"It is now up to you," he says. "It is now time to vote. Who do you want to see die tonight? Which three of these condemned criminals deserve to be put to death before another day ends? You have one hour to vote. This is American Execution."

The cameras show each prisoner one by one, with his or her voting number at the bottom of the screen. The logo displays again and the theme music swells, and another commercial begins to air.
